Narratives

You can crumple up a piece of paper into a ball, step outside, and throw it at the first stranger you see. That person will tightly hold a number of opinions in which they have absolutely zero experience. The opinions themselves are not important. What’s important is where they come from. We’ve evolved in such a way that our brains process narratives and incorporate them into our being. We use these narratives to steer our lives. So, where do these narratives come from? Well, nowadays, many of them come from our media.

  • Why does the media present the ideas that they present?
  • Who’s setting the agenda?
  • How do you trace the source? The funding?
  • What do they aim to achieve?
  • How do you discern the things that are true when everybody’s feeding you lies?

Nowadays, so-called enlightened humans look at the stories of old and say to themselves: “People used to be so dumb. How did they used to believe these silly stories?”

Meanwhile, the minute they get home from work, they put on the nightly news or their favorite news podcast and absorb whatever content was deemed appropriate for that day - all for the social ritual of “being informed”. How can our democracy possibly last if we don’t stay up to speed with whatever’s going on thousands of miles away?

They’ve taken for granted that they get for free what governing bodies around the world spend billions of dollars to collect - intelligence. Meanwhile, we’re told that we’re not allowed to think for ourselves. These best practices were put in front of us by experts in their field, and who are we to question them?

Well friends, it’s time to start questioning and building some narratives of our own.
